Use f/8 when the car spans substantial depth or when a commercial-style image needs every edge clear. Use f/2 to f/4 when you deliberately want a soft background and can keep the key design features in the focus plane. When your keeper rate improves, try 1/80, 1/60, or 1/30 second. Slower shutter speeds create longer background streaks and more wheel blur, but they magnify every tracking error. Vehicle speed, distance, focal length, and angle all change the result, so there is no universal magic number.
Keep the autofocus point on a high-contrast feature such as the windshield pillar, headlight, or grille. Side-on movement is easier because the distance changes slowly. A car approaching at an angle demands better focus tracking and a faster shutter speed.
