How to Read NEF Metadata (Nikon RAW)
A Nikon .nef file stores standard EXIF (camera, lens, exposure, date, and GPS if available) plus extensive Nikon MakerNotes, and notably, most Nikon bodies record a shutter/image count you can actually read. What is a NEF file?
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's RAW format, used across its DSLR and Z-series mirrorless cameras. It's a TIFF-based container that stores the full sensor data (typically 12 or 14 bits per channel) along with rich metadata.

Unlike most brands, Nikon reliably records a shutter/image count in the NEF metadata. That makes a NEF straight from the camera genuinely useful for verifying a used Nikon body:
