RawTherapee 5.13 is a free, cross-platform RAW processor released on July 26, 2026. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, supports a wide range of camera files, and saves editing instructions without changing the original image. It gives photographers deep control over demosaicing, tone, color, noise reduction, sharpening, lens corrections, and batch output.

The crowded tool panels can make a first edit feel harder than it is. You do not need to understand every control. A reliable beginner workflow uses the File Browser to select images, applies a sensible processing profile, corrects exposure and white balance, refines tone and color, checks detail at 100 percent, and sends finished files to the Queue.

This guide follows that order. It focuses on decisions that visibly improve a photograph and explains when to leave a tool alone.

What RawTherapee does and does not do

RawTherapee develops RAW sensor data into a viewable image. It reads the camera file, interprets its color and tonal information, applies your adjustments, and exports a new JPEG, TIFF, or PNG. The original RAW file remains untouched.

Edits are stored in small PP3 sidecar files. A sidecar records tool settings and can travel with the original. RawTherapee can also store processing information in its cache. Keeping PP3 files beside photographs makes the work easier to move and back up.

RawTherapee is not a pixel editor like Photoshop or GIMP. It is designed for global and sophisticated image-processing adjustments, not freehand compositing, text layout, or extensive object removal. You can send an image to an external editor after RAW development when the project needs layers or detailed retouching.

It is also not primarily a catalog manager. The File Browser offers folders, ratings, color labels, filters, and a batch queue, but photographers who need a large searchable catalog may pair it with a separate digital asset manager.

Install version 5.13 from the official site

Download the installer for your operating system from the official RawTherapee site. Use the stable build unless you intentionally want to test development features. On first launch, open Preferences and confirm the language, interface scale, default image directory, color-management settings, and sidecar behavior.

Do not overwrite older preferences blindly if you are upgrading from a much earlier version. Tool defaults and processing profiles evolve. Keep a backup of custom profiles and test several representative images after the upgrade.

A calibrated display helps any editing application. If the operating system uses an accurate monitor profile, RawTherapee can display colors through that profile. Understand the File Browser, Editor, and Queue

The File Browser shows folders and thumbnails. Use it to rate, label, filter, select, and apply processing profiles to one or many images. RawTherapee reads folders directly, so there is no mandatory catalog-import step.

The Editor shows a large preview, histogram, navigator, history, and adjustment tabs. This is where you refine one image. Changes appear in the preview and are written as instructions, not baked into the RAW file.

The Queue holds export jobs. You can finish several images, add them to the Queue, choose output rules, and process them together. Queuing lets you keep editing without waiting for every full-resolution export.

The Commons screenshots show version 5.8, so individual icons and panel details may differ from 5.13. The three-part organization remains a useful map: browse, edit, queue.

Begin with a processing profile

A processing profile is a saved collection of tool settings. When you open a RAW file, RawTherapee applies a default profile so the sensor data becomes a sensible starting image. Profiles can include exposure curves, input color profiles, sharpening, noise reduction, and many other choices.

Start with the current neutral or general-purpose default rather than building every setting from zero. Judge it as a starting interpretation, not a finished look. If a camera-specific profile is available and trustworthy, compare it with the general profile on skin, saturated colors, and deep shadows.

Create your own baseline profile only after you understand which defaults you repeatedly change. A useful personal profile might include preferred lens correction, capture sharpening, output color space, and conservative noise settings. Do not save a fixed white balance or exposure correction into a profile meant for every photograph.

Use partial profiles when you want to apply only selected tools. For example, a high-ISO noise profile should not replace an image's crop, white balance, or exposure work.

Step 1: Inspect exposure and clipping

Open the image and look at both the preview and histogram. Turn on highlight and shadow clipping indicators. Bright warnings are diagnostic, not proof that the image is ruined. Specular reflections, light bulbs, and the sun may clip legitimately. Texture on skin, clouds, white fabric, or product surfaces deserves more protection.

Use Exposure Compensation to place the main subject. Then refine bright areas with highlight controls and the tone curve. If important highlights were clipped in every RAW channel at capture, software cannot reconstruct true detail. If only the rendered preview was bright, RawTherapee may recover substantial information.

Avoid lifting shadows automatically. Decide whether they support the subject. Raising dark areas increases visible noise and can flatten the image. Use the histogram as a map while making the visual decision on a calibrated preview.

Check the capture settings with the EXIF viewer when a file has unexpected blur or noise. Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, and focal length often explain the problem before an editing slider does.

Step 2: Set white balance before creative color

Choose the camera white balance as a starting point. If a known neutral object appears in the frame, use the picker and sample an area without clipped pixels or strong reflections. Then refine temperature and tint by eye.

Neutral is not always desirable. Sunset, candlelight, and blue hour have a color character worth preserving. The goal is believable relationships between colors, not forcing every white object to become numerically gray.

Evaluate skin, clouds, concrete, paper, and other familiar materials. If all neutrals look green, correct tint. If shadows and highlights have different unwanted casts, global white balance may not solve both. Use color tools later for a controlled correction.

Set white balance before strong saturation because color casts become harder to judge after chroma increases.

Step 3: Build contrast with tone controls

Adjust overall exposure first, then use a tone curve to shape contrast. A gentle S-curve darkens lower midtones and brightens upper midtones. Keep control points sparse. Many closely spaced points create abrupt transitions and make later changes difficult.

Use highlight compression when bright tonal detail needs a smoother rolloff. Use shadow adjustments carefully to reveal information without eliminating depth. Local Contrast can add perceived detail in mid-sized structures, but too much produces halos around horizons, buildings, and high-contrast edges.

For high-dynamic-range scenes, begin with a natural result. A viewer should notice the subject before noticing the processing. If clouds become darker than the landscape or every surface has equal contrast, reduce the effect.

Compare the edited preview with the original at intervals. The History panel lets you step backward. You can also create snapshots while testing two approaches, such as a quiet low-contrast version and a stronger landscape interpretation.

Step 4: Correct color with restraint

Use saturation for broad intensity changes and vibrance when you want a more selective increase. Watch reds, oranges, and blues because highly saturated channels can lose texture. Skin can become orange long before the rest of the frame appears excessive.

The Lab and color appearance tools offer advanced control, but a beginner can produce excellent results with white balance, a modest vibrance change, and selective hue or luminance corrections. Add one tool at a time and toggle it off to confirm that it solves a visible problem.

If one color is distracting, adjust that color rather than reducing the entire image. Darken a bright green background, reduce a cyan sky cast, or shift a problematic hue in small amounts. Large hue rotations can create broken transitions along object edges.

Soft proofing is valuable when preparing a print because paper and ink cannot reproduce every display color. Use the intended printer profile, enable gamut warnings, and make a proof-specific version rather than weakening the master edit.

Step 5: Apply lens and geometry corrections

Correct distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting before final cropping. RawTherapee can use embedded correction data or lens profiles when they are available. Confirm that the detected camera and lens are correct. A wrong profile can bend straight lines or apply an unsuitable vignette correction.

Use perspective correction for leaning buildings and uneven horizons. Leave room around the subject because transformation crops the edges. Architecture often benefits from straight verticals, while an intentionally tilted action frame may not.

Crop after major geometry corrections. Choose an aspect ratio that fits the delivery target, then check edges for cut limbs, tight vehicle mirrors, partial text, and bright distractions. Rotation should follow the visual reference that matters, such as a horizon, building vertical, or deliberately angled subject.

Step 6: Evaluate noise at 100 percent

Noise reduction should be judged at full resolution and then checked at the intended output size. Begin with chrominance noise because colored speckles are distracting and can often be reduced without destroying much detail. Add luminance reduction only as needed.

Balance luminance smoothing with detail retention. Hair, foliage, fabric, stars, and fine texture can turn waxy when noise reduction is too strong. Dark background areas may tolerate more smoothing than the subject, but global tools require compromise.

High-ISO files can benefit from RawTherapee's advanced noise controls, while low-ISO daylight files may need very little. Do not enable heavy noise reduction merely because a preset includes it. Our low-light noise guide explains the capture and editing tradeoffs.

Dead or hot pixels should be handled separately from ordinary noise. If the same bright pixel appears in many files, use the appropriate correction and consider creating a repeatable camera-specific profile.

Step 7: Sharpen in the right order

RAW files need capture sharpening because demosaicing and the sensor's optical system soften fine detail. RawTherapee offers several sharpening methods and controls. Begin with the default capture-oriented settings, inspect high-contrast edges at 100 percent, and avoid bright halos.

Sharpening cannot repair motion blur or missed focus. It can make those problems look harsher. If eyelashes, text, or fine edges never become distinct, choose another frame or accept a smaller output.

Apply output sharpening according to final size and medium. A full-resolution print and a 1600-pixel web image need different treatment. Resize first in the export pipeline, then add a restrained output adjustment if the result needs it.

Judge the complete image at normal viewing size. A file that looks aggressively crisp at 100 percent may feel brittle online or in print.

Step 8: Save, export, and use the Queue

When the edit is ready, add it to the Queue. Choose JPEG for web sharing and routine delivery, TIFF for high-bit-depth transfer to another editor, or PNG for workflows that specifically require it. For a typical web JPEG, use sRGB because browsers and consumer displays handle it consistently.

Set the destination folder and naming pattern before starting a large batch. Avoid exporting over originals. A simple structure separates source RAW files, working sidecars, high-quality masters, and web-ready copies.

Choose JPEG quality according to the destination and inspect the result. Maximum quality creates larger files with little visible benefit for many web uses. Preserve metadata only when it is appropriate. Copyright and descriptive fields may be useful, while precise GPS coordinates can expose a home, nesting site, or private location.

Before publishing, check location data with the GPS location extractor. Use the EXIF remover when privacy matters. Then open the exported file and verify dimensions, color, sharpness, compression, and metadata rather than assuming the queue settings were correct.

Batch-edit similar photographs

Select a group made under the same light and apply a partial processing profile or copy selected adjustments. White balance, lens correction, noise reduction, and a baseline tone treatment often transfer well across a burst. Crop, local refinements, and exposure may still need individual attention.

Choose one representative frame, finish it, then synchronize only the relevant tools. Inspect the first few results before queuing hundreds. Mixed lighting, changing clouds, auto ISO, or zoom-lens vignetting can make a single preset inconsistent.

Ratings and color labels help narrow a large shoot. Make a fast technical pass to reject missed focus and accidental frames, then a second creative pass to compare expressions and composition. Editing fewer strong files is faster than trying to rescue every capture.

Keep PP3 sidecars with the RAW files when backing up or moving a project. Without them, the original photographs remain safe, but your RawTherapee decisions may not travel with the folder.

A practical beginner workflow checklist

  1. Browse the folder and rate the strongest frames.
  2. Open one representative RAW file.
  3. Apply a current general-purpose processing profile.
  4. Confirm highlight and shadow clipping.
  5. Correct exposure and white balance.
  6. Shape tone and contrast with small changes.
  7. Refine color while watching skin and saturated channels.
  8. Apply lens, perspective, rotation, and crop corrections.
  9. Inspect noise and sharpening at 100 percent.
  10. Add the image to the Queue with the correct output profile and size.
  11. Process the Queue and inspect the exported file.
  12. Save the RAW file and PP3 sidecar together.

This order is a framework, not a restriction. Returning to exposure after a color adjustment is normal. What matters is that each tool answers a visible question.

Common RawTherapee mistakes

Turning on too many tools

Disable everything that does not solve a clear problem. Strong tone mapping, local contrast, saturation, noise reduction, and sharpening can compound into an artificial result even when each adjustment seems modest alone.

Editing only at 100 percent

Use 100 percent for noise, focus, demosaicing artifacts, and sharpening. Return to fit view for composition, tone, color balance, and overall impact. Both views answer different questions.

Treating a profile as a finished edit

A profile is a starting point. It cannot know the subject, intended mood, important highlight, or delivery medium. Review every synchronized setting on each important frame.

Losing sidecar files

Configure RawTherapee to write PP3 files alongside images and include them in backups. A RAW file is the source capture; its sidecar is the map of your edit.

Exporting in the wrong color space

Use sRGB for general web delivery unless the client or print workflow specifies otherwise. Wide-gamut files can look dull or oversaturated in applications that handle color poorly.

Trying to fix capture failures with processing

No RAW processor can recreate clipped sensor data, correct severe motion blur, or move focus onto the subject. Use metadata and failed frames to improve the next exposure.

Learn one tool per editing session

Finish several photographs with the short workflow before exploring advanced modules. Then choose one new tool, read its help, apply it to a suitable image, and compare it at multiple strengths. Save a snapshot or profile when the result is repeatable.

RawTherapee rewards curiosity, but consistency comes from restraint. A technically clean starting profile, deliberate exposure and color decisions, careful 100-percent checks, and verified exports will handle most photographs. The advanced controls remain available when a real image gives you a reason to learn them.
