The Ricoh GR IV is a 25.74-megapixel APS-C compact built around a fixed 18.3mm f/2.8 lens, equivalent to 28mm on full frame. It weighs 262 grams with its battery and memory card, starts in about 0.6 seconds, and can genuinely fit in a jacket pocket. That combination still makes the GR concept unusual in 2026.
The difficult part is the price. Ricoh launched the camera at a US MSRP of $1,499.95, while current retail pricing can vary by seller and availability. That is mirrorless-camera money for a fixed-lens body with no viewfinder, no built-in flash, no weather-sealing claim, and only Full HD video.

The specification sheet tells only part of the story. None of these numbers is radical in isolation. The appeal comes from fitting an APS-C sensor, stabilization, responsive controls, and a sharp prime lens into a body smaller than many compact zoom cameras.
Body, controls, and pocketability
The GR IV retains the dense, purposeful feel that defines the series. Its magnesium-alloy body has a real grip, a front dial, a rear control, and direct buttons for common exposure decisions. Most functions can be operated with the right hand. That matters on a street camera because the moment often disappears while a larger system is still coming out of a bag.
At 109.4mm wide and 32.7mm deep, the camera fits many coat pockets and looser trouser pockets. The lens retracts when powered off. A slim body alone does not guarantee comfortable carrying, though. The grip and protruding controls can catch on tight fabric, and the camera deserves a clean pocket rather than one containing keys or grit.
There is no electronic or optical viewfinder built in. You compose on a fixed 3-inch, 1.04-million-dot touch display. The screen is adequate indoors and in moderate daylight, but the camera is less pleasant at eye level in hard sun. Ricoh does not present the GR IV as weather sealed. That omission matters because this is exactly the kind of camera people want to carry every day. A small protective pouch and sensible caution around rain, blowing sand, and dusty pockets are prudent.
The redesigned 28mm-equivalent lens
The new 18.3mm f/2.8 lens uses seven elements in five groups and maintains the classic 28mm-equivalent angle of view. It is wide enough for layered street scenes, architecture, travel interiors, and environmental portraits without immediately looking ultra-wide. It also demands that you move close and organize foreground space.
The lens focuses to 10cm in its macro mode. That is useful for food, details, signs, and travel objects, although it does not turn the camera into a true 1:1 macro system. At close distance and f/2.8, background separation is stronger than a phone can usually produce optically.
DPReview's updated in-depth review found the revised lens more consistent than its predecessor and scored the camera 84 percent. In practical terms, the GR IV produces crisp central detail at wide apertures and strong performance across the frame when stopped down. The 26MP files leave modest room for cropping to the camera's 35mm and 50mm digital crop views.
The built-in two-stop ND filter is valuable in bright conditions. It lets you stay near f/2.8 for subject separation or use a slower shutter around moving people and water without attaching a filter adapter. Two stops will not replace a strong ND filter for midday long exposures, but it suits the camera's fast, minimal setup.
Sensor quality and image character
The back-illuminated APS-C sensor records 14-bit DNG raw files and JPEGs. Its 6192 x 4128-pixel output is enough for detailed prints, editorial crops, and generous web use. The sensor also supports 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9 capture options.
At base ISO, files hold fine texture and give useful latitude for recovering shadows. As sensitivity rises, raw noise appears progressively rather than suddenly. ISO 3200 and 6400 remain practical when exposure is sound, especially for documentary images where some grain is acceptable. The extreme ISO 204,800 setting is an emergency option, not a normal quality target.
Ricoh's JPEG image controls are part of the attraction. Positive Film, high-contrast monochrome, and other profiles can produce finished-looking files in camera. Save raw files alongside JPEGs when the light is difficult. You keep the quick visual result while retaining a neutral file for later adjustment.
After a walk, load representative files into the EXIF viewer. Sort your keepers by shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. That metadata shows whether stabilization is helping at slow speeds and whether Auto ISO is choosing values that match the way you move.

Autofocus and Snap Focus
The hybrid autofocus system combines image-plane phase detection with contrast detection. It is quicker and more dependable than earlier GR implementations, especially for static people and everyday subjects. Face and eye detection help with casual portraits. The camera still does not behave like a sports-oriented interchangeable-lens body when a subject moves unpredictably toward the lens.
Snap Focus remains the defining GR tool. You choose a preset distance from 0.3m through infinity, then bypass autofocus when you press the shutter decisively. At 28mm and f/8, a carefully chosen distance creates enough depth of field for candid scenes without waiting for focus acquisition.
A useful street setup is:

- Snap distance at 1.5m or 2m
- Highlight-weighted metering when bright signs or windows dominate
- Raw plus JPEG recording
Test the actual near and far sharpness before relying on any zone-focus estimate. Your viewing size and tolerance matter. Snap Focus is fast because it removes a decision, not because it corrects a poorly chosen distance.
Stabilization and low-light shooting
Ricoh moved to five-axis sensor-shift stabilization in the GR IV. Stabilization cannot freeze a walking person, but it helps with static scenes at shutter speeds that would otherwise show hand movement. A careful photographer may get sharp frames well below 1/30s, although the reliable limit varies with stance and technique.
For night streets, decide whether subject motion or camera motion is the bigger risk. Use 1/250s or faster for moving people and accept a higher ISO. For a static storefront or interior, lower the shutter speed and let stabilization preserve image quality. Shoot two or three frames because body movement changes between exposures.
The camera's small size helps here. Press it gently against a railing or wall, brace your elbows, and roll the shutter rather than jabbing it. The lack of a viewfinder removes a third contact point, so stable screen-based technique is important.
Battery, storage, and daily reliability
The Ricoh DB-120 battery is rated at 1,800mAh and approximately 250 shots under Ricoh's CIPA test conditions. That improves on the GR III's approximate 200-shot rating. Heavy image review, wireless transfer, and repeated power cycling can still make a spare battery worthwhile.
USB-C supports charging and compatible USB Power Delivery. A small power bank can recharge the camera during lunch or between locations. The camera can also receive power while operating, useful for interval work.
Internal storage is a genuine strength. Approximately 53GB can hold hundreds of raw files even if you leave a card at home. The tradeoff is the move to UHS-I microSD cards, which are smaller and easier to misplace than full-size SD cards. Treat internal memory as useful primary capacity and an emergency fallback, not as a backup made simultaneously with the card.
Flash and video limitations
The GR IV has no built-in flash. The optional Ricoh GF-2 flash is compact and integrates with automatic exposure, but its guide number of 3 at ISO 100 is intended for nearby subjects. It is a fill and snapshot light, not a substitute for a powerful bounce flash.
Video remains limited to Full HD at up to 60p, with clips capped by time, file size, or temperature. There is no 4K mode. The fixed screen also makes self-recording awkward. Short documentary clips are possible, but video creators can find much stronger tools at this price.
That limitation is less surprising once you accept the GR IV's design priority. Nearly every major choice supports still photography, immediate access, and small size. Buying it for hybrid work means paying for strengths you will not use while accepting weaknesses you will notice constantly.

The older Ricoh GR III remains relevant if budget matters. Both cameras provide an APS-C sensor, a 28mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens, raw capture, stabilization, and Snap Focus in a pocketable body.

The fixed lens is both discipline and restriction. Before spending $1,499, set an existing camera or phone to roughly 28mm equivalent and use only that view for a week.
