Canon shutter count: model support and CR3 limitations
Some Canon originals contain a readable ShutterCount. Support depends on the camera and parser. For example, ExifTool documents EOS R5/R6 and R6 Mark II counters that include both electronic and mechanical exposures.

Documented examples, not a universal compatibility list
ExifTool lists ShutterCount in CameraInfoR6 for EOS R5/R6 and CameraInfoR6m2 for EOS R6 Mark II. Its notes identify both as combined electronic-plus-mechanical counts. These are documented decoder fields, not cameras tested by ExifGrabber.

Read a Canon original
Use the original CR3 or JPEG. Preserve the full output and any warnings. If a browser viewer returns only general EXIF, use a dedicated MakerNote decoder before concluding that the counter is absent.

The ExifTool author confirmed adding the reported R6 counter to version 12.68. This illustrates why a blanket claim that Canon files never contain a counter becomes outdated. Record your installed version when sharing results.
Does the number measure mechanical wear?
A combined counter cannot isolate mechanical actuations. For example, an illustrative total of 30,000 exposures could include extensive electronic-shutter use; the total alone cannot tell you the mechanical portion.
Do not rename FileNumber or FileIndex to ShutterCount in a report. If no documented field is available, say the file did not provide a supported count. A camera-compatible diagnostic or service inspection may be needed to answer a different question about the hardware.
