Does Instagram remove EXIF data?
Do not rely on Instagram as a guaranteed EXIF-removal step. A public image and the uploaded original are different evidence surfaces. Inspect the exact downloadable rendition to answer what another viewer receives; that cannot establish what Instagram processed or retained internally.

What the available evidence supports
IPTC’s 2019 Instagram test reported no displayed embedded metadata and no supported Save As or download path in that test. It did not establish a current, universal result for downloaded Instagram files. No new live Instagram retention test is claimed on this page.
EXIF removal is different from metadata use
Meta announced use of IPTC and C2PA signals to help identify AI-generated content across its platforms. That is separate from the question of whether camera EXIF survives in a public image. Do not generalize from an empty GPS field to “Instagram ignores all metadata.”
How to check a specific Instagram image
Use a non-sensitive original with known GPS and capture-time values. Publish through the intended path, then retrieve the image in the way your audience would. Record whether the case concerns a feed image, story, message, or account export.
Compare the original and retrieved file with the command below. If the fields are absent in the retrieved file, your supported finding concerns those fields in that file. A screenshot tests screenshot output rather than the served image bytes.

A visible place label, caption, recognizable building, reflection, or other scene detail can reveal location independently of embedded GPS. Review those details as well as the file.
For sharing that requires location privacy, prepare and verify the distribution copy before uploading. Remove sensitive post-level labels separately. Do not treat a successful check of one public rendition as proof about all copies, delivery paths, or future platform behavior.
Can missing camera metadata be recovered?
If a downloaded file no longer contains a capture tag, a metadata viewer cannot recreate the original value from that missing field. Ask for the original when provenance matters. A platform-generated timestamp describes a different event unless its meaning is established.
For reporting, cite the test date, input format, retrieval method, and fields examined. Separate a documented observation from an inference about the platform’s internal systems.
