What scanner resolution numbers really mean

Scanner marketing often emphasizes dots per inch. That number describes a sampling setting, not a guarantee that the optics, film flatness, sensor, and signal processing resolve the same amount of real detail. A 7200 dpi setting can create a very large file without delivering twice the visible detail of a clean 3600 dpi scan.

Use a fair test negative before committing an archive

Choose one frame with fine texture, deep shadows, bright highlights, neutral objects, saturated color, and visible grain. Scan it with several settings. Avoid a soft portrait or motion-blurred frame because the original cannot reveal the scanner's limit.

Compare these traits:

  1. Usable detail: Can you see real subject texture, or only larger grain and file size?
  2. Shadow separation: Do dark areas retain color and shape without noisy banding?

  4. Film flatness: Are all four corners equally sharp?

Metadata after scanning

A film scan's embedded EXIF usually describes the scanner or digital camera, not the camera that originally exposed the negative. The original lens, shutter speed, aperture, and film stock do not magically return during digitization.
