Rear-curtain sync makes a flash fire near the end of an exposure instead of near the beginning. The camera records ambient-lit movement first, then the short flash burst places a sharp subject at the end of that movement. Light trails appear to follow a moving subject, which usually looks more natural than a sharp subject with blur extending in front.
The technique is also called second-curtain sync. It works best in dim conditions where a shutter speed between roughly 1/4 second and two seconds can record visible ambient movement. The exact setting depends on subject speed, background brightness, lens angle, and how much blur you want.

Front-curtain versus rear-curtain sync
A focal-plane shutter exposure has a beginning and an end. At common flash-sync speeds and slower, the first curtain opens to reveal the sensor, the exposure continues, and the second curtain closes it. Front-curtain sync fires the flash shortly after the first curtain opens. Rear-curtain sync fires shortly before the second curtain starts closing.
Imagine a cyclist moving from left to right during a one-second exposure. Ambient streetlights record the bicycle across its path as blur. With front-curtain sync, the sharp flash image appears near the left side, then the blur continues to the right. The trail appears in front of the cyclist. With rear-curtain sync, the blur forms first and the flash freezes the cyclist near the right side. The trail appears behind.
The effect is not simply a longer flash. A normal speedlight burst can be much shorter than the shutter time, especially at reduced power. The sharp component comes from that brief burst. The blurred component comes from ambient light accumulated while the shutter remains open.
Rear-curtain sync does not eliminate blur on the subject. It overlays a flash-frozen image on ambient blur. If ambient light on the subject is too strong, the sharp and blurred versions compete. If ambient is too dark, the trail disappears and the result looks like ordinary flash.

Confirm that your camera and trigger support it
Rear-curtain timing is usually controlled by the camera, not selected independently on every flash. Look for Rear Curtain, Second Curtain, 2nd Curtain, or a rear-arrow flash symbol in the flash-control menu. Some cameras combine it with a slow-sync option. Availability may change with exposure mode, shutter type, flash model, or wireless triggering method.
Start in mechanical shutter mode. Many cameras restrict flash with a fully electronic shutter, and some disable second-curtain timing in particular combinations. Use manual camera exposure so shutter speed, aperture, and ISO remain stable while you experiment.
If the flash is off camera, confirm that the wireless flash trigger and receiver transmit second-curtain commands for your camera system. A basic manual radio trigger may fire reliably but only at the first curtain. Manufacturer compatibility tables are more useful than a generic claim that a trigger supports TTL.
Studio flash systems can be inconsistent with rear-curtain sync because trigger delay, long flash duration, and proprietary timing affect when the burst occurs. Nikon's own guidance for some cameras specifically warns that correct rear-curtain synchronization may not be obtained with studio flash systems. Test your exact combination before a paid session.
A repeatable first exercise
Practice in a dim room with a small lamp in the background. Ask a person to walk sideways or move a bright object through the frame. A small LED light wand makes the path easy to see, but a phone screen or reflective object can work too.
Use this starting setup:
- Set the camera to manual exposure.
- Select mechanical shutter and rear-curtain sync.
- Set ISO 200, f/5.6, and 1/2 second.
- Put the flash in manual mode at about 1/32 power.
- Focus where the subject will finish, then switch to manual focus.
- Ask the subject to begin moving before or as you press the shutter.
- Keep the movement going until the flash fires.
Review three things separately. Is the ambient trail visible? Is the final flash-frozen subject bright enough? Is the subject finishing in a useful position? Adjust one contribution at a time.
Change shutter speed to alter the trail. Change aperture, ISO, or ambient brightness to alter how strongly the trail records. Change flash power, flash distance, or aperture to alter the frozen subject. ISO and aperture affect both ambient and flash, while shutter speed mostly affects ambient at normal flash-sync speeds.
Do not chase a perfect exposure immediately. First prove that the blur leads into the sharp subject. Once the direction reads clearly, refine brightness and composition.
Control ambient exposure first
Turn the flash off and make a test at the intended shutter speed. You want a frame that is dark but not empty. Background lights should register, and the moving subject should create a visible trace. If the ambient-only frame looks normally exposed, the subject may leave a strong ghost that competes with the flash.
A useful target is an ambient frame roughly one to two stops darker than your desired final image. This is a starting point, not a rule. A nearly black subject against bright city lights can tolerate a brighter background. Pale clothing under street lamps may need greater underexposure.
Adjust ambient exposure in this order:
- Choose shutter speed for trail length.
- Choose aperture for depth of field and flash working range.
- Raise or lower ISO to place the background.
- Reposition away from unwanted lamps hitting the subject.
Shutter speed is the creative control. A person waving an arm may show clear movement at 1/4 second. A slow walker may need one second. A car may cross the frame too far in one second, so 1/10 or 1/15 second can be enough. Make a short sequence because timing varies from frame to frame.
Add the flash-frozen layer
Turn the flash on at low manual power. Lower power often produces a shorter burst, which freezes motion more crisply. Move the flash closer before raising it to full power. Distance is efficient, and a close source can also produce better direction and softer light when used with a suitable modifier.
Place the flash 30 to 60 degrees to the side of the camera so the frozen subject has shape. Keep it out of the path of motion and aim it at the subject's final position. A gridded modifier or controlled beam helps prevent flash from lighting every part of the path and creating a broad, pale smear.
TTL can work when subject distance changes, but manual flash is easier for learning because it removes one variable. Once the setup is consistent, TTL may be useful for an event floor where people move unpredictably toward and away from the light.
Use front-curtain sync for one comparison frame, then switch back to rear-curtain. That comparison confirms whether the camera or trigger actually changed timing. It also teaches you to recognize direction from the result rather than relying on the menu icon.
Settings for dancing and event portraits
Dancing works well because limbs create recognizable curves while the face can be frozen at the end. Begin around 1/4 second, f/4, ISO 400, and 1/32 flash power. Those are test settings, not universal exposure values. Dim the room contribution or lower ISO if the face produces a heavy ambient ghost.
Ask the subject to turn, sweep an arm, or step across the frame, then pause briefly in the final pose. The pause does not need to be long. It simply gives you a predictable end position and a cleaner expression when the flash fires.
Keep the background visually active. Small lamps, colored signs, reflective decorations, or window lights create readable streaks. A blank dark wall may record body blur but provide little sense of movement. Avoid placing a bright lamp directly behind the final face.
At a live event, obtain permission before using flash and avoid distracting performers. A bounced on-camera flash can be less intrusive than a bare direct burst, though bounce direction changes as you move. Watch nearby guests and do not fire repeated high-power sequences into their eyes.

Settings for bicycles, runners, and cars
For faster subjects, start around 1/10 to 1/30 second. Pan with the movement so the subject remains in a similar part of the frame while the background streaks. The rear-curtain burst then defines the final position.
Use continuous autofocus if the camera can maintain focus in the available light. Otherwise, pre-focus on a marked finish point and have the subject pass through it. Allow extra room in the direction of travel. Even though the blur trails behind, the sharp subject still needs visual space ahead.
Do not use flash where it could startle a driver, cyclist, animal, or other person in a hazardous environment. Stage vehicle work on private property with a spotter and a controlled path. Reflective road signs can return much more light than expected, so inspect the first frame for clipping.
Panning and rear-curtain sync solve different problems. Panning can keep the moving subject relatively sharp through camera movement, while rear sync adds a truly frozen layer at the end. Drag the shutter with intentional camera movement
You do not need a moving subject. Keep the person still and move the camera during the exposure. Rotate slightly, push in, pull out, or trace a small arc, then allow the rear-curtain flash to anchor the subject at the end.
This approach creates streaks from background lights while the final face remains legible. Start around 1/2 second. Make the movement smooth and small. Large random shaking usually produces visual noise rather than direction.
A zoom lens can create radial streaks if you change focal length during the exposure. Keep the subject near the center because the streaks radiate around that point. Complete the zoom before the flash fires or the frozen composition may not match your framing.
Handheld work is appropriate here because camera movement is intentional. A travel tripod with a fluid head becomes useful when you want a precise pan, repeatable rotation, or a static environment around a moving subject.

Understand flash duration and power
The shutter may be open for half a second, but a speedlight at low power can emit light for only a tiny fraction of that time. That brief duration is what freezes the final subject. At higher power, many speedlights have a longer tail, which can soften very fast motion.
If the flash-frozen edge is blurred even though focus is correct, lower flash power and move the light closer. Open the aperture or raise ISO only as much as needed, because both changes also strengthen ambient blur. You may need to reduce room light or choose a darker location.
Two flash-duration specifications sometimes appear in technical documentation: t.5 and t.1. The t.1 figure measures a longer portion of the light output and is more useful for evaluating motion stopping. Do not assume a headline duration measured at minimum power describes full-power performance.
For most portraits and dancing, moderate speedlight power freezes well enough. Water splashes, snapping fabric, and very fast athletic movement demand shorter duration and tighter timing.
Rear sync, slow sync, and high-speed sync are different
Rear-curtain sync controls when the flash fires during a relatively slow exposure. Slow sync is a broader camera behavior that allows slower shutter speeds so ambient light records with flash. Some cameras offer front-curtain slow sync and rear-curtain slow sync.
High-speed sync allows flash above the camera's normal synchronization speed by pulsing while the shutter slit travels across the sensor. It is useful for wide apertures in daylight, but it reduces effective flash power. It does not create the same end-of-exposure trail.
Do not combine terms casually when troubleshooting. If the goal is a visible ambient trail behind a subject, you need a slow enough shutter and confirmed rear-curtain timing. If the goal is f/1.8 in bright sun at 1/2000 second, you need high-speed sync instead.
The dark band shown above is a synchronization failure, not a rear-curtain effect. It occurs when the shutter curtain blocks part of the sensor during the flash burst. Stay at or below the normal sync speed unless high-speed sync is active and supported across the camera, trigger, and flash.
Focus and composition in low light
Autofocus may struggle before the flash because the scene is intentionally dim. Use a modeling lamp, AF-assist beam, or small continuous light if it does not spoil the ambient exposure. Pre-focusing on a finish mark is the most repeatable method for staged motion.
Compose for the full trail, not just the final subject. Leave space behind the direction of motion and check the frame edges for bright lines that pull attention away. A wide lens exaggerates camera movement and subject distance changes. A normal lens makes the effect easier to control.
Make the final pose readable as a silhouette before adding flash. Separated arms, a clear stride, or a turned shoulder gives the frozen layer a recognizable shape. If limbs overlap at the end, no amount of technical precision will make the gesture clear.
Review at full size. A bright rear screen in a dark venue can make an underexposed file look acceptable. Use the histogram and highlight warning, then inspect the face and key edges for true flash sharpness.
Read the metadata after the session
Rear-curtain success depends on small changes in shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and timing. Memory is unreliable after dozens of experimental frames. Open the strongest and weakest files in the EXIF viewer and compare their recorded settings.
Look for patterns:
- Which shutter speed produced a readable trail without clutter?
- Which aperture gave enough depth at the finish point?
- Did ISO make the ambient ghost too strong?
- Did focal length change how dramatic the camera movement felt?
- Was flash mode recorded by your camera and software?
Not every manufacturer writes the same flash details into standard metadata, and some editing exports remove maker notes. Keep original RAW files while learning. A simple contact sheet labeled with settings can become a personal reference for the venue and subject type.
Troubleshooting rear-curtain sync
The blur appears in front of the subject. Confirm rear or second curtain is selected, switch to mechanical shutter, and test with the flash directly on camera. If that works, the wireless trigger may not transmit the timing command.
There is no visible trail. Lengthen the shutter time, raise ambient exposure, add small background lights, or use a more reflective moving subject.
The final subject is too transparent. Increase flash contribution, reduce ambient light falling on the subject, or ask for a brief pause at the finish position.
The face has two distinct images. The ambient exposure is too strong on the face. Lower ISO, close the aperture, move away from direct room light, or shorten the shutter while preserving some trail.
A dark band crosses the frame. The shutter speed is above the supported sync limit, high-speed sync is not active, or the trigger delay is incompatible. Slow the shutter and retest.
The flash fires at the beginning despite the menu setting. Disable electronic shutter, verify flash compatibility, update relevant firmware, and test without a radio trigger.
The trail is chaotic. Simplify the background, shorten the exposure, give the subject one clear movement, or make a controlled camera pan rather than shaking.
Three creative recipes
Neon walking portrait
Place the subject beside colored storefront lights. Start at 1/4 second, f/4, ISO 400, and low manual flash power from the side. Ask the person to take one step and settle into the final position. Pan gently with the movement. Keep the brightest sign away from the final face.
Light-wand spiral
Put the camera on a tripod and pre-focus. Have an assistant move the LED wand behind the subject during a one-second exposure. The subject stays mostly still, then the rear-curtain flash freezes the final pose. Use a grid so flash does not wash out the trail.
Bicycle pass
Work in a safe closed area. Begin around 1/15 second and pan with the rider. Place an off-camera flash at the finish side, aimed across the path and safely clear of it. - Direct the subject toward a clear final position.
- Check trail direction and dark shutter bands.
- Watch the background edges and final face.
After shooting:
- Preserve original RAW files and metadata.
- Compare successful settings in the EXIF viewer.
- Edit the frozen subject and ambient trail as separate visual layers.
- Keep color from the venue instead of neutralizing every light.
The final frame should explain the movement
Rear-curtain sync is successful when a viewer can understand where the subject came from and where the motion ended. The blur is not decoration. It is a record of time that leads into a sharp visual conclusion.
Begin with one light, one movement, and a half-second exposure. Establish the ambient trail before adding flash, then use a short low-power burst to define the final position. Once that relationship is predictable, combine it with panning, colored light, dance, and intentional camera movement. The technique becomes creative only after the timing becomes repeatable.
