What is RW2?

RW2 is Panasonic's RAW format, produced by Lumix cameras across the G (Micro Four Thirds) and S (full-frame L-mount) lines, including the popular GH video-hybrid bodies.

It's a TIFF-based container that stores the sensor data along with the shooting metadata Panasonic records.

What metadata RW2 files carry

RW2 files carry standard EXIF plus Panasonic MakerNotes, which include lens information and Lumix-specific settings. ExifGrabber shows the common fields in tabs and everything else in the raw dump.

The extension is uncommon enough that many generic viewers don't recognize it, ExifGrabber reads it directly and extracts the embedded preview so you can see the shot.

Where RW2 files come from

  • Panasonic Lumix G / Micro Four Thirds (GH6, G9…)
  • Panasonic Lumix S full-frame (S5, S1…)

Want to remove the metadata?

Metadata removal for RW2 isn't supported yet, RAW and HEIC files store metadata woven into the file structure. You can still view everything here. To strip metadata from a JPEG, PNG, or WebP, use the EXIF remover.
